How-to Guide | Clone NVMe SSD to NVMe SSD

Solid State Drives (SSDs) have evolved over time, offering a variety of storage options for consumers. One such industry-standard software interface, NVMe, has been specifically designed for PCIe SSDs, allowing for up to 64K commands per queue, but utilizing only thirteen essential commands for efficient performance. In contrast, traditional SSDs can only handle one command or query at a time.

NVMe SSDs are specially designed for high-performance storage, connecting to the CPU via PCIe sockets. They offer significant improvements over SATA SSDs, HDDs, and traditional SSDs, with faster speeds and greater efficiency. NVMe SSDs come in various form factors, including M.2, PCIe Slot, and U.2, with U.2 exclusively using the NVMe protocol. The major differences between NVMe SSDs and traditional SSDs lie in their connectivity, speed, and efficiency, making NVMe SSDs a popular choice for users seeking high-performance storage.

Can I Clone NVMe SSD to NVMe SSD?

You can clone NVMe SSDs with different form factors, allowing users to upgrade to larger storage capacity, such as cloning a smaller M.2 NVMe SSD to a larger M.2 or U.2 NVMe SSD.

We recommend using Qiling Disk Copy to clone your NVMe SSD. Since Windows doesn't have a built-in cloning feature, a third-party tool is necessary. Qiling Disk Copy has a clear and simple interface, making it easy to use. Cloning an NVMe SSD is similar to cloning a hard drive to an SSD, and you won't need to reinstall Windows or worry about data security throughout the process.

Qiling Disk Copy

  • Offers sector levels cloning, which helps to clone a hard drive with bad sectors by creating a sector-by-sector copy of the source drive, effectively bypassing any bad sectors and allowing for a complete and accurate clone of the original drive. This process is particularly useful for cloning drives that have failed sectors or are no longer recognized by the operating system.
  • Supports cloning from MBR to GPT and vice versa
  • Supports adjust disk layout
  • Compatible with Windows 11/10/8/8.1/7

What Do You Need in NVMe to NVMe Cloning?

Before cloning an NVMe SSD for secure boot, you'll need to take some extra steps. You'll need to prepare for the cloning process by considering the specific requirements of your NVMe SSD, which is a newer model of SSD.

● It's better to have a newer computer with a Skylake or later chipset, even if it's compatible with older hardware, in order to take full advantage of NVMe capabilities.
● an M.2 PCI-E x4 slot
● UEFI firmware & UEFI boot mode

1. If you have already run an operating system on NVMe SSD, the above pre-conditions can be omitted. All you need to pay attention to is the following two aspects: Ensure the NVMe SSD is properly seated in the PCIe slot, and ensure the power supply can provide sufficient power to the NVMe SSD.

● If there's only one NVMe M.2 slot, you can either use an adapter to clone the second drive from M.2 to PCIe, or use backup and restore to migrate the data.
● The NVMe SSD cloning software should be a comprehensive tool that caters to various cloning needs. It should provide features for cloning an NVMe SSD to another, creating a duplicate, or migrating data to a new drive, ensuring seamless data transfer and minimizing downtime. The software should also offer options for selecting specific data to clone, such as files, folders, or operating systems, allowing users to customize their cloning process and achieve their desired outcome.

How to Clone from NVMe SSD to NVMe SSD

To clone your NVMe SSD, you can use Qiling Disk Copy, which can be downloaded from the provided button. The process involves following the guide step-by-step, utilizing the software to create a precise copy of your NVMe SSD.

Note: Please activate Qiling Disk Copy for a smooth disk copying or cloning process.

Step 1. Download, install and run Qiling Disk Copy on your PC.

select the hard drive that you want to clone

To copy or clone a disk, start by clicking the head of the disk and selecting the source disk that you want to copy or clone. Then, click Next to proceed with the process.

Note:The destination disk should be at least the same size or larger than the source disk to copy or clone the source disk sector by sector.

Step 2. Select the destination disk where you want to clone/copy the old disk and click Next to continue.

select the destination disk

Step 3. To proceed, check and edit the disk layout by selecting "Autofit the disk", "Copy as the source", or "Edit disk layout". Autofit the disk is the recommended option.

To clone the source disk's partition layout to the destination disk, select the "Copy as the source" option. This will replicate the exact partition arrangement from the source disk to the destination disk, ensuring a precise duplication of the disk's structure.
Edit disk layout allows you to manually resize or move partition layout on the destination disk, giving you more control over the final setup.

Finish copying or cloning disk to new disk

If your destination disk is an SSD drive, make sure to select the "Check the option if the target is SSD" option. This ensures that the cloning process is optimized for the SSD drive.

The cloning process will create an exact replica of the source disk, including all files, folders, and operating system. This can take several minutes to hours, depending on the size of the source disk and the speed of the computer.

The user is asked to confirm if they want to erase data on the destination disk, and they need to click OK to proceed with the operation.

How to Move OS to Another Drive Without Reinstalling Windows?

Transferring an operating system to a new hard drive can be a time-consuming and frustrating process, but using reliable clone software like Qiling Disk Copy can simplify the task. With this software, you can create an exact replica of your existing hard drive, including the OS, settings, and applications, and transfer it to a new hard drive in a matter of minutes, saving you the hassle and time of reinstalling the OS and configuring everything from scratch.

Conclusion

The improvisation in SSDs has offered multiple benefits to users, including improved throughput speed and low latency. Picking an NVMe SSD allows for seamless work, and the option to clone the entire content of a storage device into a new disk is also available. The Qiling Disk Copy tool provides a user-friendly interface and simple steps for a unique cloning experience, and backing up data with software before initiating the cloning process is also a recommended option.
